Abstract


This survey was aimed to determine the prevalence of periodontal diseases and to investigate the association between subjective symptoms and clinical periodontal conditions in the faculty memvers of Chonnam National University. The written
questionares
were made about the subjective symptoms related to periodontal diseases and the experiences of professional periodontal care and were answered by each subject. The periodontal examinations were done clinically and diagnosed on health, gingivitis,
and
periodontitis by 3 dxperienced dintists majoring in Periodontics. A total of 895 subjects(807 males and 88 females, 23~65 years old in age) were recruited for this survey. The association between periodontal conditions and subjective symptoms was
analyzed with Chi-square test at the probability level<0.05.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The seventy nine percent of the subjects were diagnosed as having periodontal disease. The pervalences of gingivitis and periodontitis were 42.23% and 37.21% respctivoly.
2) According to the age, the prevalence of the periodontitis was 6% in the group of younger than 30 years old, 25.5% in the group of 30-39 years, 30% in the age group of 40-49 years and 53% in the group of over 50years old.
3) The most frequent subjective symptoms were tooth hypersentitivity and gingival bleeding. The sense of tooth extrusion, mobility and gingival swelling were significantly related to the periodontal diseases.
4) Scaling was received by 61.9% of the subjects subjects. Twenty six percent receive the periodontal therapy under local anesthesia for the periodontal problems.
In conclusion, the prevalence of periodontal disease is high and increases with age. The subjective symptoms are not accurate for the real periodontal with age only the one third of the subjects diaghosed as periodontal diseases received the
periodontal
therapy. Therefore, regular periodontal screening by dentists is essential for the early diagnosis and prevention of periodontal diseases.
